2018 Customer survey insights – The evolution of construction management and technology

These stats suggest that the companies that use Bridgit and, more specifically, the people who ultimately make the decision, are at the forefront of industry thinking and will emerge as the leaders of the future.

A few weeks ago, we reached out to a large set of our customers with a short survey.

The results were really interesting, so we thought we’d share them in the hopes that they might be inspirational or helpful to you in your own careers and projects.

Who’s represented?

The survey respondents came in with a 50/50 split between Canadian and U.S.-based construction professionals, and represented a diverse mix of company types:

General contractor: 70%

Developer: 34%

Property owner: 9%

Subcontractor: 5%

Property management: 2%

(note that the list above adds up to more than 100%, because some companies fulfill more than one role in the construction ecosystem – similarly, several of the lists/stats lower in this post also exceed 100% for the same reason)

Our respondents also represented a diverse set of roles and titles, with the following primary areas of functional responsibility:

Project manager: 43%

Management: 36%

Operations: 7%

Other: 14%

What’s in “Other”? A collection of roles: Design Oversight, Project Controls Management, Quality Control, Financial Analyst, Customer Care, and Senior Construction Analyst.

That list was exciting for us to read because it shows that our solutions are helping lots of different people!

It also serves as a reminder that construction companies have far more roles than perhaps most people would expect; only by understanding these diverse roles and the specific requirements of each can any solution provider hope to deliver real-world value.

Putting Bridgit to use

Obviously, we just had to ask our clients how they’re using our solutions!

More than 60% of respondents use Bridgit in their day-to-day activities, and we were proud (but not surprised!) to see that those activities made up a long list of use cases:

Closing out punch lists

Quality planning and inspections

After-sales service

Deficiency tracking and management

Pre-delivery inspections (PDIs)

Project management and status reports

Construction checklists and tasks

Trades and staff coordination

It’s really great to see that customers are experiencing value across a number of different project elements.

Driving construction technology adoption

The construction industry is changing, sometimes slowly and sometimes quickly, with technology playing an increasing – and increasingly ever-present – role, in all aspects.

We were curious what role our direct contacts play in driving forward the industry’s adoption of technology, and the results suggest that our contacts play a very large role indeed!

Fully 66% of our survey respondents are decision-makers when it comes to technology adoption; additionally, 59% act as evaluators, and 57% influence the decision.

These stats suggest that the companies that use Bridgit and, more specifically, the people who ultimately make the decision, are at the forefront of industry thinking and will emerge as the leaders of the future.

Consider that a recent global construction survey conducted by KPMG showed how slow construction companies are to adopt technology. This survey found that although 72% of the engineering and construction executives surveyed stated that technological innovation played a role in their vision, less than half had a clear strategy in place to integrate those advancements.

Moreover, only 5% of respondents considered themselves on the forefront of embracing these advancements, while the majority stated that they were industry followers instead of leaders.

As a recent Constructive Dive article suggests, “What these numbers showcase is that construction executives and leaders are aware of the value and necessity of integrating technology with their business models, but most haven’t taken actionable steps to make doing so a reality.”

At least in terms of field solutions for ensuring quality, getting work done, and measuring and reporting, Bridgit’s customers are ahead-of-the-curve.

What’s holding back other construction companies? As Bridgit co-founder Lauren Lake discussed at the Canadian Construction Association’s 100th Annual Conference, “it can be difficult to know where to start.” For instance, the giant end-to-end ERP systems make a lot of claims, but introducing them into your company and processes is a very long and very expensive proposition that might require changing how you do, well, everything.

Lake advises that, “going digital doesn’t have to be complicated.” It’s easier (and faster, so you experience value immediately) to start with smaller solutions to specific challenges; this approach lets you score a few wins and get your whole workforce and organization comfortable adopting technology.

Communicating about construction

Finally, we wondered how do you like to consume your content? Email is the runaway winner, with 75% support. After that?

Industry magazines/publications: 50%

Social media: 36%

Video: 30%

Industry blogs: 23%

Independent online search: 18%

Webinars: 16%

It’s not surprising to see webinars down at the bottom. After all, webinars tend to be scheduled events, and one thing that regularly comes through in conversations with our clients is that their days are crazy!

Similarly, it’s easy to see why more passive, unscheduled information sources like emails and publications are preferred – they can be consumed wherever, whenever.

Lastly, what types of content you find interesting?

Educational (e.g., industry trends, best practices): 82%

Construction project highlights (e.g., testimonials, success stories, case studies): 77%

New products and feature announcements: 70%

Product tips and tricks: 50%

Industry analyst reports: 41%
